When planning a move, one of the key questions many people have is about the capacity of different types of removal vans. This can be especially important when comparing quotes from different companies and looking at what will be provided on move day.

Understanding how much each type of van can hold can help you better plan your move. In the UK, removals companies typically use a variety of vans and lorries, with the most common being a 3.5 tonne Luton Removals Van. Here’s a breakdown of their capacities.

Types of Removals Vans and Their Capacities

1. Mercedes Sprinter Van

Capacity: Approximately 280-350 cubic feet or 25-30 boxes.

This is approximately the quantity of belongings would find in a small 1 bedroom flat or could be used to transport individual large items.

2. Luton Removals Van (3.5 tonne)

Capacity: Approximately 400-450 cubic feet or 40-50 boxes

This is approximately the quantity of belongings you would find in a 1-2 bedroom flat.

3. Luton Removals Van (7.5 tonne)

Capacity: Approximately 650-900 cubic feet or 60-80 boxes

This is approximately the quantity of belongings in a 2 bedroom or small 3 bedroom property.

4. Removals Lorry (18 tonne)

Capacity: Approximately 1600 – 2000 cubic feet

This is approximately the quantity of a 4-5 bedroom property.

What affects the quantity of items you can fit into each van?

  1. The weight of the items, as each van also has a weight limit. So for example a 3.5 tonne removals van may fit 40 boxes of regular household items, but if these were all books, the van capacity would only be approximately 20 boxes.
  2. The stackability of items, as some items are either oddly shaped or too delicate for anything to go on top of them. This will then affect how much will fit into the van as the vans cannot be tightly stacked. Some examples of items that are difficult to stack are lamps, delicate antiques, musical instruments and houseplants.

Both of these are considered at survey, to ensure the right number of vans are provided for your move.

By understanding the capacities of different types of vans, you can better compare removals quotes and make an informed decision about what is being provided. This saves time, effort and stress when planning your move. Always consider consulting with a professional removals company to assess your needs accurately and suggest the most appropriate van size based on their experience.
